Our name change

Today ‘carbon' is the word on everyone's lips. Consensus on climate change science has been reached and understanding of the part we have all played in changing our environment has evolved. As part of this evolution we changed our our name to, Carbon Descent in 2007. The new name reflects the essence of all we do, the reason we come into work everyday - to reduce carbon emissions.

Carbon Descent, formerly known as SEA RENUE, emerged in 2003 from a collaboration of the organisations Sustainable Energy Action (SEA) and Renewable Energy in the Urban Environment (RENUE).

SEA was a not-for-profit limited company which was established by the Southwark Council in May 1998 through funding by the EU programme SAVE. After 3 years of core funding by the EU and additional support from Southwark, SEA had reached impressive heights by 2001. Being well-established in South London and with a wider understanding of environmental impacts, SEA began to work throughout London.

RENUE was established in 1996 as an environmental charity, focusing on renewable energy. Adopting an arts based approach RENUE worked on local community initiatives partnering with local authorities such as Merton and Wandsworth.

In spring 2003 both SEA and RENUE recognised that they had a similar ethos and that environmental and social goals could be better served by joining forces. From an exploration of a working partnership a merger was agreed. Continuing to work on a not-for-profit basis, SEA RENUE moved offices at the beginning of 2008 and changed its name to Carbon Descent in June of the same year.
